Belton is a small hamlet in Lincolnshire and it was in this area that the Brownlow Family established a vast estate during the mid 17th Century. They built the magnificent Belton House, now a National Trust property open to the public.
During World War I, the grounds were used as a training base by the Machine Gun Corps. There are still signs of the firing ranges in the grounds. In World War II, the Royal Airforce Regiment were housed in nissen huts in the grounds.
Take a walk through the 475 acres of rolling woodland forest. Apart from the birdlife (including buzzards, barn owls, Canadian geese and sparrowhawks) you may notice that part of the Poplar woods are planted regularly - a reminder that these trees were harvested to supply materials for matches.
Part of the Estate was sold off in the 1980s and the new Belton Woods Hotel was opened by Prince Charles in March 1992. Two golf courses were developed in the grounds around that time and a spa added in 2002.
